Lunch in Surabaya on 1 May, then the drive up to Bromo that afternoon. The wedding took up all of 2 May. On 3 May, back down to Surabaya and the flight to Jakarta.

My brother got married with Bromo behind him.
Three days in East Java for a wedding, not sightseeing. Lunch in Surabaya, up the mountain the same afternoon, ceremony on the second morning, home on the third. The scenery was a bonus, not the reason.
A family weekend, plus a volcano.
Dressing up, standing around in formal clothes, eating together, and a mountain in the back of every photo. Come for landscapes and you’ll be a bit disappointed. We didn’t come for landscapes.
1 May 2026 / Surabaya → Bromo
Lunch at Depot Bu Rudy, then three hours uphill.
The trip really started at a table in Surabaya. Depot Bu Rudy is where you eat before going anywhere else in East Java. Not a secret, just the right first meal. We ate, got in the car, and went up.
The road to Bromo is a normal mountain road. It gets colder, the turns get tighter, and everyone goes quiet halfway. By evening the sky over the mountains was gold, with low cloud in the valleys. First time all weekend it felt like more than just getting places.
Eat in Surabaya before you drive up. Not much open at the top after dark.
2 May 2026 / Plataran Bromo
Cloudy morning, everything went to plan.
The holy matrimony was in the morning. It was cloudy, which looks better in photos than sun anyway. The whole thing ran smoothly start to finish. At a wedding, that’s the best you can ask for.
Plataran Bromo is why the photos look so good. The venue’s view of the mountains was the best we saw all weekend, way better than from the road, and it’s right behind the ceremony. Nobody had to set anything up.
The reception went into the night, outdoors, under warm lights that beat any decoration. Then they brought out a birthday cake for me. Nobody warned me. I went to my brother’s wedding and somehow got sung to. That’s the part I actually remember.
People in nice clothes getting a bit emotional. This is what the trip was for. The mountain was just the backdrop.
3 May 2026 / Back to Surabaya
The drive down is fine. Not the view you came for.
The last morning was that post-wedding flat feeling. Everyone tired, nothing planned, just driving back to normal life. I forgot how long the drive took, so that tells you how memorable it was.
The views from the car are nice, nothing more. Those Bromo photos you’ve seen online? Not from here. The view worth planning around was the one at the venue the day before.
Nice. Not amazing. Not going to sell you a car window.
Jambuluwuk Bromo — new, and you can tell
One room for four of us: a loft with a mezzanine and a second bed upstairs. Way better than splitting rooms. It’s new and not all the facilities are finished yet, so don’t expect everything to be ready. We still had a good stay.
Do the Surabaya lunch on the way up
Depot Bu Rudy before the drive, not after. The climb takes the rest of the afternoon, and there’s not much to eat once you’re up the mountain.
Don’t plan the trip around road views
The drive is pretty, but normal pretty. If you want Bromo scenery, the view from Plataran Bromo is the one worth the trip, and you don’t have to drive anywhere for it.
